A Message from the Chief Nursing Officer

Irene Alexaitis

UF Health Shands Hospital is an 852-bed quaternary teaching hospital located in Gainesville, Florida.  Our high-tech environment provides many opportunities for all levels of nursing practice, from graduate nurses to advanced practice nurses.  The dynamic interdisciplinary team collaboration provides a rewarding nursing practice that is evidenced-based.

Our nursing vision — “to set new standards of excellence in autonomous and accountable nursing practice, committed to patient advocacy and innovative patient care in a climate of trust and collaboration” — is supported by our status as a Magnet hospital. Our Magnet re-designation in 2008 reinforces we are on the path to attaining our nursing vision. We are exceptionally proud to be providing our patients “experienced care, expert caring.”

As the chief nursing officer, I am committed to providing leadership to ensure high-tech, high-touch, quality care is provided to our patients. I am equally committed to creating and maintaining an environment that supports our nurses. My role is to foster a professional practice environment, where evidenced-based nursing practice is used, professional development is encouraged and nurses are empowered to make decisions that affect their practice. I am committed to recruiting and retaining the highest-quality nursing staff available.

If you are looking for a cutting-edge practice environment where you can grow and develop in any nursing specialty of your choosing, I encourage you to join our team at UF Health Shands Hospital. I assure you that you will be supported and encouraged by nursing leadership and your colleagues to reach your nursing career goals whether those goals, lie in direct patient care, advance practice, leadership or education.

I hope that you take the opportunity to join our Magnet team and continue to grow in your nursing career.
