UF Pain Management Ayers is an outpatient surgical facility located in the Ayers Medical Plaza 720 SW 2nd Avenue. The facility includes six preoperative bays, three operating room suites and five PACU bays. Normal business hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:30am to 5:00pm.
Description of Patient Populations
The patient population ranges from patients >13 years old and excludes ASA Class IV or higher anesthesia risk patients – including patients exceeding a BMI = or > 50 kg/m2. Exceptions may be made based upon the surgeon, attending anesthesiologist, and/or Medical Director’s recommendation. Specialties are anesthesia pain service.
Nursing Care
The Peri-Operative nursing staff are licensed Registered Nurses by the Florida State Board of Nursing. Surgical Technologists are graduates of community college-based Surgical Technology or comparable programs, and function under the direction of the RN. New staff are oriented to the unit during a planned orientation for approximately eight weeks, depending on previous Peri-Operative nursing experience. Professional certification (CNOR) in Perioperative nursing is available from the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and ASPAN. Certification in Surgical Technology (CST) is available from the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST). Peri-Operative staff are provided educational opportunities to attain and maintain competence in their role as defined by the job description for their specific role and by the Departmental Education Plan.
Health Care Team
The Medical Director is an appointed Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Medical staff utilizing the facility are credentialed by UF Health Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. The Associate Vice President of Perioperative Services serves as the principal administrative officer by providing management, operational leadership, and support and is responsible for the strategic vision of perioperative services and all quality and safety practices. The nursing management structure consists of a Director and a Clinical Coordinator. The Director provides leadership in the development of professional nursing practice and maintains 24-hour accountability for unit functions. The Director is also responsible for strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of systems that achieve the nursing vision and organizational goals. A registered nurse in the position of Clinical Coordinator (CC) serves as the onsite clinical expert for patient care and services by providing clinical leadership support. This encompasses all operational activities; from the time the patient is scheduled for surgery until the patient is discharged home or transferred to another level of care. The CC also provides clinical and analytical support to the AVP and Director to plan and predict patient care needs based on quality benchmarking. In the absence of the Clinical Coordinator, a charge nurse will facilitate the delivery of clinical care and serve as a resource for problem resolution.
Staffing Plan
The nursing care delivery model is team nursing. Daily staffing is based upon actual number of planned cases and anticipated acuity of patients. Scheduled working hours may be flexible, based upon the surgical schedule. Additional staffing may be obtained from UF Health Florida Surgical Center or The Oaks Surgical Center based on the needs of the department.
